TEACHING

I am currently Chair of the Department, so I teach fewer classes than I otherwise would.  Below there are links to course descriptions for recent undergraduate courses and graduate seminars.

In all my teaching, my primary aim is of course to help students develop their philosophical talents as fully as they can.  It is wonderful when a student decides to continue in philosophy, but of course most of our students pursue other things.  For these students, my central goals are, first, to help them learn to think clearly, and second, to help them understand the value of asking, and carefully addressing, the deepest philosophical questions.

During term, I hold a weekly workshop for my dissertation students and other graduate students whose central interests are in normative philosophy.  For information about this group, called DaGERS, click here.

Here is a course description for PHI 16, Foundations of American Democracy.

Here is a course description for PHI 117, Foundations of Ethics.

Here are course descriptions for two graduate seminars, one on the good, and one on the theory of normativity.
